Duncan Gillespie: Light Hearted Speechmaking

Light Hearted Speechmaking

Description

Some years ago, a survey in the United State found that people feared speaking in public more than they feared death. If a similar survey was taken today, it would certainly find that speaking to an audience remains high on the list of prospects people dread. After a life-time of listening to other people speaking in public - well or badly - and speaking to varied audiences himself, Duncan Gillespie has written this book so that anyone faced with the prospect of making a speech will not dread it, but will be able to tackle it light-heartedly. They will know that a simple physical exercise described here will work like magic in banishing nervousness. "It isn't magic. It simply makes use of the psychosomatic relationship - but it feels like magic, as your nerves leak away." One of the prime causes of nervousness dates back to our prehuman past - the 'threat-stare' which is common to all the primates - but there are simple ways in which it can be countered.. He stresses that every speaker is unique, with a lifetime of differing experiences to draw on, so should not try to make other people's speeches. The world-wide web is a source of facts which can illuminate a speech. It is strange but true that if you gather more material than you need, your speech will seem more weighty and authoritative. You will enjoy reading this book - and you will enjoy light-hearted public speaking afterwards.

Gordon Williamson,Ian Palmer: U-boats of the Kaiser's Navy

U-boats of the Kaiser's Navy

Description

As was the case in World War II, one of the greatest threats to Britain during World War I was the German U-Boat menace. Gordon Williamson traces the development of the U-Boat from the Brandtaucher, designed by Wilhelm Bauer, the father of the German submarine arm, in 1850, through to the commissioning of Germany's first U-Boat to go into service, the U-1, in 1906. All of the main types of World War I U-Boat are then covered. The operational history of the U-Boat service is also covered in some depth. Included are details of the campaigns in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, along with the slow build-up of anti-submarine measures by the allies.

Known for his revolutionary typefaces, Jonathan Barnbrook is the most sought after contemporary graphic designer working across a broad range of disciplines including graphic design, industrial design, typeface design and film. In this first book by and about him, The Barnbrook Bible features a great deal of never-before-seen work-much of which was created specifically for the book.Possibly best known as a result of his collaboration with major figures in the international art scene such as the Saatchi Gallery and Damien Hirst, Barnbrook has won numerous awards for motion graphics for his commercial film work. His most celebrated collaboration includes art directing Adbusters, the leading activist magazine. He also produces copyright-free work that highlights political and social injustices. Unafraid to express his political viewpoint, Barnbrook has garnered both praise and criticism for releasing subversive typefaces named in a confrontational manner, such as "Manson" (after the serial U-boats of the Kaiser's Navy download PDF killer) that highlight the relationship of words to the letterforms that represent them.

Human Hematopoiesis in SCID Mice

Description

This book presents essential information on the use of the immunodeficient C.B.-17 SCID/SCID mouse for studying human hematopoiesis in vivo. Because of the lack of both humoral and cellular immunity, this mouse can be a unique host for implantation of human hematopoietic tissue using different methods. In the first section, in vivo development of human hematopoietic stem cells and differentiation of human T cells are described. In addition, the effects of growth factors and toxic agents of human hematopoiesis are described. The second section contains chapters in which the human immune responses in the SCID mouse are reviewed. The third section covers SCID mouse models to study human infectious diseases, leukemias and genetic disorders.

The Heart of Change Field Guide: Tools and Tactics for Leading Change in Your Organization

Description

In 1996, John P. Kotter's Leading Change became a runaway best seller, outlining an eight-step program for organizational change that was embraced by executives around the world. Then, Kotter and co-author Dan Cohen's The Heart of Change introduced the revolutionary "see-feel-change" approach, which helped executives understand the crucial role of emotion in successful change efforts. Now, The Heart of Change Field Guide provides leaders and managers tools, frameworks, and advice for bringing these breakthrough change methods to life within their own organizations. Written by Dan Cohen and with a foreword by John P. Kotter, the guide provides a practical framework for implementing each step in the change process, as well as a new three-phase approach to execution: creating a climate for change, engaging and enabling the whole organization, and implementing and sustaining change. Hands-on diagnostics--including a crucial "change readiness module"--reveal the dynamics that will help or hinder success at each phase of the change process. Both flexible and scaleable, the frameworks presented in this guide can be tailored for any size or type of change initiative. Filled with practical tools, checklists, and expert commentary, this must-have guide translates the most powerful approaches available for creating successful change into concrete, actionable steps for you and your organization. Dan Cohen is the co-author, with John P. Kotter, of The Heart of Change, and a principal with Deloitte Consulting, LLC.

"Iggy Pop: Open Up and Bleed" is a truly definitive work not just about Iggy Pop s life and music but also about the death of the hippie dream, the influence of drugs on human creativity, the nature of comradeship, and the depredations of fame." The series of Theory Workbooks is designed to provide a practical guide to ABRSM's higher-grade Theory exams from 1999 onwards. Theory Workbook Grade 7 describes the nature of the questions set The Heart of Change Field Guide: Tools and Tactics for Leading Change in Your Organization ebook pdf on theory papers for the grade and explains clearly how to tackle them. A step-by-step guide is given to answering the questions on harmony and melodic composition and suggested answers and responses are analysed. Several samples round off these chapters, providing ample opportunity for the student to put theory into practice immediately. The context questions are prefaced by an introduction outlining the knowledge tested in the exam; these chapters contain a total of twelve sample extracts, each accompanied by many relevant questions, with answers given at the back of the book. This workbook focuses precisely on the skills and knowledge needed at Grade 7 and will provide candidates with the tools to approach the paper positively and sit it successfully.

Amitav Ghosh: Incendiary Circumstances: A Chronicle of the Turmoil of Our Times

Incendiary Circumstances: A Chronicle of the Turmoil of Our Times

Description

"An uncannily honest writer." "New York Times Book Review "The novelist and journalist Amitav Ghosh has offered extraordinary firsthand accounts of pivotal world events over the past twenty years. He is an essential voice in forums like "The Nation," the "New York Times," the "New Republic," "Granta," and The New Yorker, Incendiary Circumstances brings together the finest of these pieces for the first time including many never before published in the States -- in a compelling chronicle of the turmoil of our times. Incendiary Circumstances begins with Ghosh s arrival in the Andaman and Nicobar islands just days after the devastation of the 2005 tsunami. We then travel back to September 11, 2001, as Ghosh retrieves his young daughter from school, sick with the knowledge that she must witness the kind of firestorm that has been in the background of his everyday life since childhood. With a prescience born of experience, Ghosh warned decades ago of the dangerous rise of religious extremism. In his travels he has stood on an icy mountaintop on the contested border between India and Pakistan, interviewed Pol Pot s sister-in-law in Cambodia, shared the elation of Egyptians when Naguib Mahfouz won the Nobel Prize, and stood with his threatened Sikh neighbors through the riots following Indira Gandhi's assassination. With intelligence and authentic sympathy, he "illuminates the human drama behind the headlines" (Publishers Weekly). Incendiary Circumstances is unparalleled testimony of an era defined by the ravages of politics and nature. Amitav Ghosh is acclaimed for his political journalism and his travel writing. The New York Times Book Review called his travelogue, In An Antique Land, "remarkable . . . rivals anything by the masters of social realism in modern Egyptian literature." He is also the best-selling author of four novels, including The Hungry Tide and The Glass Palace, which has been published in eighteen foreign editions. Ghosh has won France's prestigious Prix Medici Etranger, India's Sahitya Akademi Award, the Arthur C. Clarke Award, and a Pushcart Prize. Educated in South Asia, the Middle East, and the United Kingdom, Ghosh holds a doctorate in social anthropology from Oxford. He divides his time between Harvard University, where he is a visiting professor, and his homes in Kolkata, India, and Brooklyn, New York. Advance Praise for Incendiary Circumstances "This absorbing collection of essays by the novelist, journalist, and travel writer Ghosh . . . covers some two decades of catastrophe and upheaval, from sectarian violence in his native India during the 1980s through the September 11 attacks . . . to the recent Indian Ocean tsunami. With an eye for evocative detail, he illuminates the human dramas behind the headlines: the plight of tsunami refugees trying to rebuild their lives and finances after every bank record and piece of ID is lost to the waves; the courage of ordinary Indians protecting their Sikh neighbors from rampaging Hindu mobs . . . He is equally engaging when he turns from current affairs to literary essays on, say, the international culture of novel reading or the Kashmiri poet Agha Shahid Ali. Written in luminous prose with unusual understanding . . . an insightful look at a chaotic world." -- Publishers Weekly Starred Review Praise for Amitav Ghosh "Ghosh is adept at delineating the complicated crosscurrents of emerging national independence movements. He is even more impressive at portraying the different ways in which individuals react to the turmoil, hardship, and disorientation wrought by war. Wall Street Journal "A wonderful hybrid of travel writing, reporting, historical analysis, and memoir in other words, the kind of piece [Ghosh] writes better than almost anyone else. Washington Times"

Stefan Zweig,Anthea Bell,Petra Borner: Fear

Fear

Description

A bourgeois housewife's affair is discovered, and a blackmailer turns her comfortable life into a nightmare of apprehension Finding her comfortable bourgeois existence as wife and mother tedious after eight years of marriage, Irene Wagner brings a little excitement into it by starting an affair with a rising young pianist. Her lover's former mistress begins blackmailing her, threatening to give her secret away to her husband, meanwhile her husband seems to offer her numerous opportunities to confess and be forgiven. Irene is soon in the grip of agonizing fear. Written in the spring of 1913, and first published in 1920, this novella is one of Stefan Zweig's most powerful studies of a woman's mind and emotions. 'The rediscovery of this extraordinary writer could well be on a par with last year's refinding of the long-lost Stoner, by John Williams, and which similarly could pluck his name out of a dusty obscurity.' Simon Winchester, Telegraph Stefan Zweig (1881-1942) was born in Vienna, into a wealthy Austrian-Jewish family. He studied in Berlin and Vienna and was first known as a poet and translator, then as a biographer. Zweig travelled widely, living in Salzburg between the wars, and was an international bestseller with a string of hugely popular novellas including Letter from an Unknown Woman, Amok and Fear. In 1934, with the rise of Nazism, he moved to London, where he wrote his only novel Beware of Pity. He later moved on to Bath, taking British citizenship after the outbreak of the Second World War. With the fall of France in 1940 Zweig left Britain for New York, before settling in Brazil, where in 1942 he and his wife were found dead in an apparent double suicide. Much of his work is available from Pushkin Press.

The Hall of Uselessness: Collected Essays

Description

Simon Leys' cultural and political commentary has spanned four decades, with no corner of the arts escaping his sharp eye and acerbic wit. The Hall of Uselessness forms the most complete collection yet of Leys' fascinating essays, from Quixotism to China, from the sea to literature. Leys feuds with Christopher Hitchens, ponders the popularity of Victor Hugo and analyses the posthumous publication of Nabokov's unfinished novel. He offers valuable insights into Mao's Cultural Revolution and the Khmer Rouge, and discusses Orwell, Waugh and Confucius. He considers the intertwined nature of Chinese art, culture and history alongside the joys and difficulties of literary translation. The Hall of Uselessness is an illuminating compendium from a brilliant and highly acclaimed writer - a long-time resident of Australia who is truly a global citizen.

Jeff Lindsay s bestselling, dark, ironic, and oftentimes laugh-out-loud hilarious novels about the lovable serial killer with no soul (but a redeeming desire to kill only people who deserve it) have gained a legion of fans and assumed a place in our culture." Bagged and discarded, the dismembered body of a woman is discovered in the grounds of an abandoned The Spice Routes: More Recipes from the World Food Cafe free epub monastery. Dr Temperance Brennan, Director of Forensic Anthropology for the province of Quebec, has been researching recent disappearances in the city. Soon she is convinced that a serial killer is at work. But when no one else seems to care, her anger forces her to take matters into her own hands. Her determined probing has placed those closest to her in mortal danger, however. Can Tempe make her crucial breakthrough before the killer strikes again?

The Spice Routes: More Recipes from the World Food Cafe

Description

Combining travelogue and recipes, this book tells the story of how Chris and Carolyn Caldicott followed the trails of the early spice merchants on their search for authentic spice recipes. As they travel through the Eastern Mediterranean, the Indian subcontinent, Asia, Africa and the Americas, they explain how indigenous spices were traded and how foreign spices arrived, and they explore the effect the spices have had on the local cuisines, supplying the recipes for the dishes they discovered along the way. Among their adventures are an encounter with an unscrupulous saffron-dealer in the souk in Aswan, an elephant hike through the jungles of south west Nepal, enrolment at the Thai Cooking School at the Oriental Hotel in Bangkok, and a trek across the Andes to Machu Picchu, the lost city of the Incas.

Little Book of Whittling: Passing Time on the Trail, on the Porch, and Under the Stars

Description

With a friendly, down-home style, this guide encourages readers to whittle away the hours. Great for beginners looking for an easy way to get started and more advanced carvers looking for a relaxing way to spend their time, this instructional manual provides 20 projects, including knives, forks, birds, animals, trees, and flowers. Chapters detail the proper whittling tools and materials, including what woods are best to carve, and how to start projects by selecting and safely sharpening the best knife for each project.

"Nineteenth-Century Music" contains 90 illustrations, the collected captions of which come close to providing a summary of the work and the author's methods. Technical language is kept to a minimum, but while remaining accessible, Dahlhaus challenges, braces, and excites. This is a landmark study that no one seriously interested in music Little Book of Whittling: Passing Time on the Trail, on the Porch, and Under the Stars free download pdf and nineteenth-century European culture will be able to ignore. He traces the slow emergence of modern, analytical trigonometry, recounting its colorful origins in Renaissance Europe's quest for more accurate artillery, more precise clocks, and more pleasing musical instruments. Along the way, we see trigonometry at work in, for example, the struggle of the famous mapmaker Gerardus Mercator to represent the curved earth on a flat sheet of paper; we see how M. C. Escher used geometric progressions in his art; and we learn how the toy Spirograph uses epicycles and hypocycles. Maor also sketches the lives of some of the intriguing figures who have shaped four thousand years of trigonometric history. We meet, for instance, the Renaissance scholar Regiomontanus, who is rumored to have been poisoned for insulting a colleague, and Maria Agnesi, an eighteenth-century Italian genius who gave up mathematics to work with the poor--but not before she investigated a special curve that, due to mistranslation, bears the unfortunate name "the witch of Agnesi." The book is richly illustrated, including rare prints from the author's own collection. Trigonometric Delights will change forever our view of a once dreaded subject.

Jean-Paul Sartre,Terry McWilliams,Steve Brewer,Azzedine Haddour,Robert J. Young: Colonialism and Neocolonialism

Colonialism and Neocolonialism

Description

Nearly forty years after its first publication in French, this collection of Sartre's writings on colonialism remains a supremely powerful, and relevant, polemical work. Over a series of thirteen essays Sartre brings the full force of his remarkable intellect relentlessly to bear on his own country's conduct in Algeria, and by extension, the West's conduct in the Third World in general. Whether one agrees with his every conclusion or not, Colonialism and Neo-Colonialism shows a philosopher passionately engaged in using philosophy as a force for change in the world. An important influence on postcolonial thought ever since, this book takes on added resonance in the light of the West's most recent bout of interference in the non-Western world.

The Red Book is nothing less than a spiritual fire starter -- a combustible cocktail of Hindu Tantra and Zen Buddhism, Rumi and Carl Jung, goddesses and psychics, shaken with cosmic nudges, meaningful subway rides, haircuts, relationships, sex, dreams, and intuition. The Pagan Religions of the Ancient British Isles: Their Nature and Legacy

Description

This is the first survey of religious beliefs in the British Isles from the Old Stone Age to the coming of Christianity, one of the least familiar periods in Britaina s history. Ronald Hutton draws upon a wealth of new data, much of it archaeological, that has transformed interpretation over the past decade. Giving more or less equal weight to all periods, from the Neolithic to the Middle Ages, he examines a fascinating range of evidence for Celtic and Romano--British paganism, from burial sites, cairns, megaliths and causeways, to carvings, figurines, jewellery, weapons, votive objects, literary texts and folklore.
